Evita at the Arsht Center- May 27- June 1, 2014

Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as first lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world — while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic.

Siglo de Oro- July 27-28, 2013

CARNIVAL STUDIO THEATER Saturday, July 27, 2013, 8:30pm

A troupe of traveling players comes to town to perform their “Folía” (follies): a feast of brief comic pieces (tapas-like “entremeses”) that play with classical tradition as they satirize the present. In a heady round trip between Spain’s Golden Age and today, the Folía opens a dialogue between the classic and the contemporary through the freedom of humor, the emotions of live music and the beauty of poetry. Original language and melodies intertwine with fragments, allusions, characters and lines from classic Spanish and world theater. Siglo de Oro, siglo de ahora is an homage, a game, a challenge... and a cocktail of laughter for every kind of theatergoer.

CARNIVAL STUDIO THEATER Thursday, July 25, 2013, 8:30pm

In this play, above and beyond (or perhaps below) what I wanted the central themes to be – friendship, the forging of one’s identity as a creative and rebellious act, the rituals and spells of sex in people’s secret lives – a motif started taking over, an issue that has recurrently absorbed me in several of my novels and in every play I have written: fiction and life, the role one plays in the other, the way one feeds off the other, the way the two fuse, repel and complement each other in every individual destiny. Doubtlessly, the stage is the favored place in which to depict that magic of which a person’s life is also made, that other life that we make up because we can’t really live it, only dream it, thanks to the magnificent lies of fiction. – Mario Vargas Llosa(All performances performed in Spanish. In Spanish with English supertitles)

- Mario Vargas Llosa

Salmo 91- July 20-21, 2013

CARNIVAL STUDIO THEATER Saturday, July 20, 2013, 8:30pm

Based on the book Carandiru Station by Drauzio Varella, Salmo 91 tells the story of 10 men in Pavilion 9, where 111 inmates were killed by authorities. The Carandiru massacre was the bloodiest ever perpetrated in Brazil’s prison system. The play is not a realistic account of the massacre and focuses instead on the life of marginal inmates. The director conceptualizes it as an anti-play and relies on the actors to fill out a metaphorical set, designed by José Dias, winner of the Morliere, Shell and Mambembe awards, among others. This is the second Brazilian staging of the play written by Dib Carneiro Neto, recipient of the 2008 Shell Award.
(All performances performed in Spanish. Contains full/frontal nudity, strong language, not appropriate for children)

CARNIVAL STUDIO THEATER Thursday, July 18, 2013, 8:30pm

The play builds on an essay by Spaniard Juan Mayorga in which he reflects on the like-named treatise written by German philosopher, metaphysician and critic Immanuel Kant, who already in 1795 spoke of peace not as an impossible dream but as a real possibility. In a closed room, three dogs compete to obtain the coveted job of elite-squad counter-terrorism bomb-sniffer. Strength, sensitivity, logical deduction and even moral character come into play in this disquieting metaphor for present-day state policies.

Juan CristÓbal, Casi AL Llegar A Zapadores - July 13-14, 2013

CARNIVAL STUDIO THEATER Saturday, July 13, 2013, 8:30pm

Juan Cristóbal, casi al llegar a Zapadores is a bio-drama born of research into the materials, documents and stories of two women with a number of things in common. One is 72, the other 68. They have both lived in the neighborhood of Recoleta for almost 40 years, barely 25 steps from each other. In addition to sharing secrets, tales and a neighborhood, they are the director’s grandmothers. They are charged with staging their stories with the help of two actors and a filmmaker. It’s a production that shuns conventional dramatic structure and works from the concept of a “living museum” (a place full of traces and vestiges, of details that illuminate private, everyday history) of the lives of two anonymous women and shows how fragments that fluctuate between the real and the fictional eventually shape a collective identity.

CARNIVAL STUDIO THEATER Thursday, July 11, 2013, 8:30pm

Kimba Fá is the first modern production of black percussion featuring unconventional instruments to be staged in Peru. Glass bottles, bamboo canes, buckets, knives, mats and pipes come to life as musical instruments in the hands of Kimba Fá’s percussionists. They tell stories of Lima, our capital, transforming its everyday noises into sound through percussion and rhythm. The show is named Kimba Fá, two African terms that seek to epitomize the spirit of the performance, which is appropriate for all ages. “Quimba” stands for the rhythm, gait and grace of our people and “fá” represents the energy and decisiveness needed to reach the peak and culmination of a process. Kimba Fá is a show that combines foot-stomping and percussion, turning these elements into languages and codes that create a parody of daily life. It is a contemporary look at present-day Lima, a city shaped by indigenous, European, African and Asian migrations. The city and its popular characters are the stars of this story, infused as it is with the flavor, the quimba and the cultural joy of our black people, who through this production wordlessly demand acknowledgement of their contribution to Peruvian culture.

Sleeping Beauty Marionettes- May 11 & 12, 2013

Mexico's most famous theater company returns to the Adrienne Arsht Center stage with Sleeping Beauty Dreams.
