Viewing Vizcaya: Why Change Your Wife? (1920)- September 25, 2013

Follow in the footsteps of Vizcaya's original owner, James Deering, and his guests by enjoying a historic silent film in the Courtyard of the Main House, complete with live musical accompaniment on Vizcaya's custom-made pipe organ! In a time when women had to be "perfect" wives, husbands sometimes sought the company of women less inhibited by societal expectations. In Why Change Your Wife? the husband does exactly that-and it backfires! Tickets $18; available onsite only from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on the evening of the program. 7:00 p.m., Main House.

The Light Club of Vizcaya: A Women’s Picture- November 19-March 18

The Light Club of Vizcaya: A Women’s PictureA Project by Josiah McElhenyOn View November 19, 2012–March 18, 2013

Josiah McElheny is a New-York based artist and MacArthur Fellow who has created a thirty-minute film for this commissioned project.  McElheny’s film references a little-known short-story by German writer Paul Scheerbart, The Light Club of Batavia, written in 1912. The characters in Scheerbart’s story become obsessed with the fantasy of constructing an underground light spa built entirely out of Tiffany glass.  McElheny substitutes characters drawn from Vizcaya’s history for Scheerbart’s and uses the estate as the ingenious setting for this narrative about the promise of modernity and utopia. The film combines footage of historical and archival documents along with current images of Vizcaya.

Film viewing is free with admission.  Runs continuously during open hours.

Champions at Vizcaya- September 22, 2012

Champions at Vizcaya!Saturday, September 22, 2012
10:00–11:30 a.m., Begins at Ticket Booth
Vizcaya’s creator, James Deering, was an early environmentalist and in 1914 he made the then-unusual decision to locate Vizcaya’s Main House directly on Biscayne Bay,
taking advantage of the view and preserving the rockland hammock (native forest). Today, because of Deering’s foresight, Vizcaya is home to many large and old trees, including several registered state and national champions.  Join our Chief Horticulturist, Ian Simpkins, for a tour of the notable and champion trees on Vizcaya’s grounds.  Learn about how a tree becomes a champion as well as Vizcaya’s historic tree preservation efforts.

Tickets $20; available onsite only beginning at 9:30 am on the day of the program. Private tour and admission to Vizcaya is included in ticket price. Space is limited.
