Bill Belleville, Environmental Writer and Filmmaker, presents "Salvaging
the Real Florida: Lost and Found in the State of Dreams" while
connecting to our Icon, the late John Kunkel Small, Botanist. In the
early 1900s, John Kunkel Small lived on the second floor of the Richmond
Cottage, using the Deering Estate at Cutler as a base for his
explorations through the hammock and the Everglades. For over a decadeJK
Small documented the development and destruction of Florida. Author
Bill Belleville wrote the introduction to the new edition of “From Eden
to Sahara – Florida’s Tragedy” which parallels his own travel, study and
writings on the regions rich flora and fauna.
Background: Bill Belleville is an environmental writer & documentary
filmmaker, living in North Florida. According to Carl Hiaasen, "Bill
Belleville writes gorgeously and straight from the heart." In his own
words, Belleville believes “You just have to allow yourself the luxury
of immersing the senses fully in the moment. This particular place is at
the edge of a slow oxbow of a nearby springfed river. In the rainy
season, the swamp here rises and old back-island branches and dry creeks
are revitalized again.”

CURATOR'S TOUR "SPEAK NOW" EXHIBITION
Saturday, February 16, 2013
4:30 pm to 6:00 pm
FREE & open to the public
This exclusive afternoon event welcomes the community’s art collectors,
gallerists, and art enthusiasts to gain insight on the concept,
creation, and selection of works for the “Speak Now” Exhibition. This
walk and talk tour is led by Special Projects Curator, Ralph Provisero
and Deering Estate Exhibit Specialist, Kim Yantis who will share
curatorial process as well as the artists reactions and interactions
with our Historic site and structures.
Curatorial Statement:
Speak Now, is an exhibition of artistic interjections placed throughout
the historic grounds of the Deering Estate. The open land, storied
structures and intimate niches of the estate present infinite
possibilities for both spatial and literary exploration. Artists will
use written word, visual art and the inherent poetics of the estate’s
natural and architectural treasures to create these interjections in
space.
The title alludes to the urgent need to communicate with and be
understood by one another. This aspect of society has never been more
evident. Speak Now is a referent to the relationship between literature
and the visual and performing arts as support structures for a more
replete expression of thoughts.
"SPEAK NOW" EXHIBITION OPENING
Saturday, February 16, 2013
6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
(Meet the Artist Reception at 6:00 pm. – Free and open to the public.)
Special Projects Curator Ralph Provisero and Artists
The highlight of this year’s Deering Estate Festival of the Arts is a
curated invitational show that features Artists from the Deering Estate
at Cuter Artist in Residence Program, Fountainhead Residency and
Studios, and Invited Exhibitors. CuratorRalph Provisero invites the
viewer to discover artistic interjections placed throughout the historic
grounds of the Deering Estate. This year we welcomed the prominent The
Fountainhead Residency and Studio program and selected artists to join
forces with featured Artists in Residence from the Deering Estate at
Cutler. Unique elements of this exhibition include spontaneous poetry
creation and readings by the fire circle, an Artist Bookstore in the
Historic Library, and traveling performance piece that “tours” the site.
Dialogues develop between the space and artists with some works
confronting the viewer, some on the outskirts of a view, on the
outskirts, and some hidden in plain sight.Guests are welcome to bring
blankets, lawn chairs and picnic baskets. Parking is free.
