Chapungu: The Great Stone Sculptors of Africa- until November 16, 2013

Chapungu: The Great Stone Sculptors of Africa is a free exhibit of statuary featuring 20 works from Zimbabwe’s greatest contemporary sculptors, whose art invokes an awareness of the wisdom and legends of traditional African cultures. These impressive monoliths have an expressive power unlike any other, depicting themes such as nature and the environment, family and society, and legends and the spirit world.

Picante-With the South Beach Chamber Ensemble- November 3, 2013

4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Join the South Beach Chamber Ensemble in another performance in beautiful spaces. This concert, entitled "Picante" features music from or inspired by Cuba, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. Manisero Fantasy, based on the Cuban folk song, "The Peanut Vendor" was written for the South Beach Chamber Ensemble by Al Torrente in 2012. This will be the southeastern US premiere. Also being performed is Heitor Villa-Lobos String Quartet #3. Villa-Lobos has been described as the single most significant creative figure in the 20th-century Brazilian art music. Next is Argentine icon Astor Piazzolla's Tango Ballet. The last piece will be aldemaro Romero's famous Fuga con Pajarillo. A Venezuelan composer, conductor, pianist and orchestra founder, Romero based this work on folkloric themes mixed with classical tradition, taking the joropo, a native Venezuelan dance, to a whole new level. Nayda Collazo-Llorens: Pleasure, Fear and the Pursuit of Happiness- until November 3, 2013

A public textual intervention consisting of text bubbles throughout the walking paths of the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens. Collazo-Llorens' works are based on thoughts and memories, both real and invented, collected from Miami Beach locals and visitors. The text was collected by completing on-site questionnaires, informal surveys and casual conversations in and around Miami Beach. Pedestrians will experience the narrative by participating in an open-ended journey, a textscape or mental mapping to accompany them as they walk the gardens.
