Tea is a film essay by artist Mario Garcia Torres (b. 1975). It documents his journey to One Hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan, a hotel opened in 1971 by Italian conceptual artist Alighiero Boetti (b. 1940- d. 1994). This public program marks the first visit for Mario Garcia Torres to Miami while working on a new project for PAMM. Tickets include a reception with the artist following the screening. 4 p.m.

Viewing Vizcaya: Why Change Your Wife? (1920)- September 25, 2013

Follow in the footsteps of Vizcaya's original owner, James Deering, and his guests by enjoying a historic silent film in the Courtyard of the Main House, complete with live musical accompaniment on Vizcaya's custom-made pipe organ! In a time when women had to be "perfect" wives, husbands sometimes sought the company of women less inhibited by societal expectations. Optic Nerve Film Screening- August 23, 2013

MOCA’s ANNUAL OPTIC NERVE VIDEO FESTIVAL

Series will be screened continuously during museum hours Saturday August 24 and Sunday August 25! The Museum of Contemporary Art has announced the finalists that will be featured in Optic Nerve 15, the annual festival of short videos by artists. This open international call initiated by MOCA allows artists worldwide to submit recent work for consideration. These finalists represent 5% of total submissions. Winning work(s), selected by MOCA Curator Alex Gartenfeld, will be acquired for MOCA’s permanent collection.

These 14 finalists were selected by a panel of world-class curators:
 
Andrew Bonacina, Artistic Director of International Project Space, Birmingham, UK; Alex Gartenfeld, Curator, MOCA North Miami; Debbie Grimberg, independent curator, Buenos Aires; Kathryn Kraczon, Assistant Curator, ICA, Philadelphia; Aram Moshayedi, Curator, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and Hanne Mugaas, Director and Curator, Kunsthall Stavanger, Norway. A
ll films were made in the last two years and are five minutes or less in length. Gartenfeld says: “Optic Nerve is a crucial aspect of MOCA’s annual programming. It reflects the museum’s commitment to innovations in new media. The open call is an enduring format that reached leading members of the community in Miami, and beyond.”

Optic Nerve will be screened at MOCA on Friday, August 23 at 8 pm, preceded by an Art Talk by Aram Moshayedi at 7 pm. Prior to his new position at the Hammer Museum, Moshayedi served as associate curator of the Gallery at The Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater(REDCAT). He is also the former curator at LA><ART, a nonprofit contemporary art space in Los Angeles. Moshayedi has written extensively on art and film/video in numerous publications including Artforum, Art in America, Frieze, X-TRA Contemporary Art Quarterly and Bidoun for which he is also a contributing editor. The talk and screening are free with museum admission ($5 Adults; $3 students and seniors, free for members and residents of North Miami.) Optic Nerve 15 will play continuously during museum hours Saturday, August 24 and Sunday, August 25. Audiences will be invited to vote for their favorite entry.

The series will also be shown simultaneously at MARTE, Museo de Arte El Salvador. Subsequent international screening dates will be announced. MOCA’s Optic Nerve is recognized as an important forum for emerging artists working in film. This is its 15th iteration. Since its inception in 2000, over 220 artists have been featured in this series, many of them publicly presenting their work for the first time.

Bert Stern, also known for his seminal film Jazz on a Summer's Day, experienced a meteoric career that began as a mailroom-boy at Look Magazine, where he formed a close relationship with young staff photographer Stanley Kubrick. The launch of Stern's career and the Golden Age of Advertising would coincide with Stern's iconic and legendary "Driest of the Dry" campaign for Smirnoff in 1955. Set against the backdrop of the Egyptian pyramids, this ad would sell more vodka than Smirnoff had dreamed, transforming America into a martini-sipping country and launching Stern to star photographer status at the age of 25. Sought after by Madison Avenue, Hollywood, and the international fashion scene, Bert was at the heart of what creative director George Lois called "the creative evolution." His groundbreaking images of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, Marilyn Monroe, Twiggy and the infamous Lolita image from Kubrick's film, coupled with his astonishing success in advertising, minted Stern - along with Irving Penn and Richard Avedon - as a celebrity in his own right. indeed, Stern’s photographs of Monroe in her last sitting are considered to be the ultimate images of the 20th century icon. After marrying the stunning ballet dancer Allegra Kent, the kid from Brooklyn was sitting on top of the world...until a dramatic fall from grace.
